Fans of the new Audi R8 supercar have flocked to buy their own model of the vehicle, leading the German automaker to declare that it has sold out.

Audi reported that "stock of Audi R8 cars is sold out for months to come".

The R8, a midengine supercar, featured in the recent blockbuster Iron Man and its looks have won over devotees the world over.

While Audi did not disclose how many of the coveted sports car were sold, it reported that total sales in April were up more than 2.9 per cent, taking monthly sales up to 86,700 cars last month.

The two seater R8 is the first midengine sprots car released by the manufacturer popular with luxury car hire customers.

It has a 4.2-litre FSI V8 engine which can power the vehicle from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 4.4 seconds.
