introduced in the late 70's changed Audi's previously conservative image when the famous Quattro four wheel drive system forever and then by introducing the world conquering "Audi Quattro" rally car it influenced the brand's high tec, sporting perception even to this day.
After WWII, most of Auto Union's assets were located Soviet controlled East Germany, and the factory was dismantled in 1948. The management team had fled to Ingolstadt a few years before, and in 1949 founded Auto Union GmbH. As Germany's economy began to improve, the new company began building motorcycles and light delivery vehicles under the DKW name. This would continue into the late 1950s when Daimler-Benz acquired Auto Union as a wholly-owned subsidiary.
Union found a new owner in VolkswagenAutoIn 1965 . Four years later, Volkswagen purchased another German car company called NSU. VW then merged Auto Union and NSU to form Audi NSU Auto Union AG. The Audi name had officially returned.
